Trust & Obey

What does it mean to Trust & Obey?

I like to think of faith as trust and obey, aside from the usual answer that you will get from the book of Hebrews 1:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for , the evidence of things not seen. Which is the definition of faith?

I don't know if your Church uses hymnals or not but there is a simple song titled "Trust & Obey" that expresses something very fundamental about Faith.

The chorus goes like this:

Trust and Obey, for there's no other way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

trust and obey or rust and decay

A wise old writer, once wrote, two wings of a dove, don't weigh her down. She rises by means of them. The two wings of a Christian are Trust & Obey. The Christian obeys because we trust, and trust because we obey.

Faith, Trust & Obey

If we obey without faith we get nowhere. If we trust or have faith without obedience it ends in nothing. Christ has given eternal salvation to those who obey him and to those who believe him. Obviously trust and obey are synonymous of each other or as twins, they go to like peanut butter and jelly.

Trust and obey are like the two sides of a coin, if you split the coin down the middle from its edges, it will be worthless. The same goes for trust and obey. It takes two sides in order to hold its value. Trust is on one side of the coin and obeys on the other.

Our modern Church says, “Just believe”. There is a problem with just believing.  It is just one side of the coin. Remember you need two sides in order for it to hold its value. This false doctrine has been preach so much so, by the Church that the non-believing world, believe that if they just believe in Jesus, they are saved. This has lead to what I call a faithless faith.

Faithless Faith VS. Trust & Obey

Faithless faith is really a mental assent, or an acknowledgement of something that is true. God will not honor this type of faith.  The book of James 2:14-16, puts it this way:

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?  If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,  And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

See you cannot divide that coin. It can’t be separated. Or else it will be worthless. You can’t just have trust and you can’t just have obey.

It is trust and obey.

Believe God, trust Gods word, and then go get obedience. You will find that it will be for your eternal salvation and Jesus will become you’re all in all.
